Zlatograd is located on the border between the Western and Eastern Rhodopes, in the valley extension of the Malka and Golyama Reka rivers, 430 m above sea level. It is the southernmost Bulgarian city. Below the city, the rivers flow as one and are a tributary of Varbitsa. It is located 50 km east of Smolyan and 25 km from Madan. The nearest railway station is about 39 km away - it is called Podkova. The archaeological remains of churches and chapels bear witness to past life. It is believed that today's town is the successor of the medieval Bulgarian town of Belovidovo, which was about 7 km northwest of the village of Startsevo. Here, the population grew a lot of millet and that is why it was called Dar Dere by the Turks, i.e. "millet valley". Since 1934, the city has been called Zlatograd, because of the golden tobacco grown there. Zlatograd is located 152 km from the city of Plovdiv. The distance from Zlatograd to Varna is 436 km.
