Vidin is one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria. Here, as early as the 3rd century BC, the Celts built a settlement called Duponia. During the Roman era, the Roman fortress of Bononia was built on its foundations (in the center of the current quarter of Caleto).
During the Middle Ages, Vidin was known under the name Bdin. At the beginning of the 9th century, it entered the boundaries of the Bulgarian state and established itself as the center of a separate administrative area. During the Second Bulgarian State, the city had a particularly great importance in the defense system of the state. As the most reliable fortress on the northwestern border, Bdin repeatedly repelled the raids of Cumans, Tatars, and Magyars. In the second half of the 14th century, the kingdom of Bdina broke away from Tarnovo. In 1371, Ivan Sratsimir, son of Ivan Alexander, declared himself the independent ruler of Bdin.
In the XIII-XIV centuries, Bdin developed as a significant urban center. Goods from Wallachia, Hungary, and Dubrovnik arrived in its port. The medieval city was also a famous literary center. Two valuable written monuments have been preserved to this day - a gospel written in Bdin in the second half of the 14th century, kept by the British Museum in London, and the Bdin collection from 1360, which is kept in the library in the city of Ghent, Belgium.
