Velingrad is located in the western Rhodopes and was created as a united town from the merger of the three villages of Kamenitsa, Ladzhene and Chepino in 1948. It was named after the folk heroine Vela Peeva. The city is an important crossroads of roads from Plovdiv, Pazardzhik, Dospat and Yundola. It is located at an average of 745 m above sea level near the 77 mineral springs (with a temperature of 22º to 90.5°С), surrounded by the mountain ridges of Syutkya, Alabak and Karkaria among beautiful pine forests. It is characterized by a very favorable, healthy climate, which, together with the mineral springs and the attractive nature, is the basis for the growth of the city as a first-class balneotherapy and climatic resort. The city's water wealth (mineral waters) is three times greater than that of Hisarya, 8 times that of Bankya and 11 times that of Varshets. Almost all mineral springs are captured and used for the mineral baths, dozens of spas, rest stations, swimming complexes, greenhouses and others. The mineral water is recommended mainly for rheumatism, arthritis, neuralgia and other diseases.
