Veliko Tarnovo is located in northern Bulgaria and is one of the oldest and most beautiful historical settlements in the country. It is the capital of the Second Bulgarian State (1186 – 1396). It is the third capital of Bulgaria. It is located on several hills along the picturesque gorge of the Yantra River. The average altitude of the city is 224 m. and the climate is moderately continental.
Veliko Tarnovo is the administrative center of an industrial-agrarian region. The highways Sofia - Varna and Ruse-Stara Zagora cross here. The station is on a railway line that connects Northern and Southern Bulgaria through the Trevnen pass. A permanent road connection has been established with the largest railway junction in Northern Bulgaria - Gorna Oryahovitsa and the nearby civil transport airport.The city is visited every year by more than half a million tourists. The beautiful amphitheater location, the numerous architectural monuments, the picturesqueness and the heroic past give it the unique appearance of an all-Bulgarian national shrine.
The beautiful gorge of the Yantra River divides the mountain massif into several hills Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, Sveta Gora and Momina krepost, on which Veliko Tarnovo arose and grew.
From the highest part of the historical Tsarevets hill, there is a wonderful view. To the west is the amphitheater Varosha Renaissance complex, which descends along the historic Gurko Street. To the northwest, opposite Tsarevets, is Trapezitsa hill. In the interhills on both banks of the river is located the ancient Asenova area (now Asenov). To the northeast, the road to Arbanasi - Gorna Oryahovitsa winds along Garga Bair. You can see part of the old Arbanasi houses and the area of Ksilifor. To the southeast you can see Momina krepost and in the lower part of the Tsarevets hill - the medieval quarter of foreign merchants, called by the Turks Frank-hisar. The buildings of the Veliko Tarnovo University "Cyril and Methodius Brothers" and the student town are located on the hill of Sveta Gora.
