Svilengrad (15,541 inhabitants) is located in southeastern Bulgaria and is our last city, located on both banks of the Maritsa River, 2 km from the Greek and 14 km from the Turkish border, at the last narrowing of the river between the Rhodopes and the Sakar Mountains. At this important strategic location, a Thracian settlement arose in the earliest historical times, which later became a Roman roadside fortress named Burdenis. The fortress was destroyed during the barbarian invasions.
The current city arose at the beginning of the 15th century near the river Maritsa as a settlement of fishermen and boatmen. Located on an important international road, it grew rapidly. In 1529, by order of the Grand Vizier Mustafa Pasha, a stone bridge, 295 m long, was built in the settlement of Maritsa, which for 450 years has served without fail the huge traffic between Europe and the Middle East. The Turkish traveler Evliya Cheleba wrote that "this is the only one of the artfully made world-renowned bridges in the Rumelian lands ". It is supposed to have been built by the famous Turkish architect Mimar Sinan. It is certain that the funds and labor of a large part of the enslaved Bulgarian populationwere invested in it. Today it is a valuable historical monument in Svilengrad.
After the Liberation under the Treaty of Berlin, Svilengrad remained in Turkish territory. After the Balkan War, it again entered the borders of Bulgaria. The city is the largest silkworm center in our country with a large warehouse, a modern cocoon dryer, a silk mill and a silk fabric factory. In 1969, the "Sakar" plant was built near the city, which satisfies the needs of our country for industrial brass equipment.
About 6 km southwest of Svilengrad station is the border village of Mezek. Two of the most remarkable archaeological monuments in Bulgaria are preserved here, from two different historical periods - the Mezek beehive tomb of Mycenaean type and the medieval Neutzikon fortress.
