Sliven is located in the northwestern corner of the Sliven field at the foot of the Sliven Mountain. The amazingly beautiful rock piles of Sinite kamuni stays as a magnificent northern setting. In the Sliven Mountains, the peak of Bulgarka (1181 m) stands out - the highest in the Eastern Stara Planina. Several Balkan rivers merge in the city, which is where its name comes from. 
 
The mounds in Slivensko Pole bear witness to settlement life as early as Thracian times. A Thracian tomb was discovered near the village of Kaloyanovo at 13 km on the road to Burgas on the right. There was a Roman-Byzantine fortress to the north-east of the city on Hisarlukka hill. Medieval Sliven arose as a successor to an old Slavic settlement on the site of today's Novo Selo district in the northeastern part of the city. Arab geographer Idrisi mentioned in 1153 Istiliphunus as a large city. During the centuries of the Second Bulgarian State, Sliven was a fortified city with important economic and cultural importance. In addition, a number of monasteries (Malkata Sveta Gora) were built near the village of Sotirya to the east of the city. 
 

The Ottoman invaders destroyed the medieval city and founded today's Sliven southwest of it. In the first centuries, Sliven was a privileged settlement of falconers and foresters. At the end of the XVIII and the first half of the XIX, the city was one of the largest in the Bulgarian lands. In the middle of the century, it already had about 25,000 inhabitants, Bulgarians and Turks alike.
