Burgas is located in southeastern Bulgaria, at the bottom of a gulf of the same name (the largest on our Black Sea coast).

By the number of its inhabitants, Burgas is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria. The terrain on which the city was built is low, which is why the waters seeping in from the sea form three lagoon lakes - Atanasovsko, Burgas and Mandrensko. The city is located between the sea and the first two lakes.

Burgas is a relatively new city. In ancient times, when the cities of Apollonia, Mesemvria and Anchialo arose and flourished by the sea, there was no settlement here. The Sladkite Kladentsi area between Lake Burgas and the sea was famous, where there was only water to drink. Perhaps here the ancient Greeks had an emporia - a permanent marketplace for barter trade with the Thracians. During the Roman rule, several settlements arose in the vicinity of today's city. Such a settlement was the fortified Roman city of Deultum, founded in 71 AD by Emperor Vespasian as a military colony for the veterans of the eighth legion - Colonia Deultum. It was later called Develt. Its ruins can still be seen near the present-day village of Debelt.

The medieval village of Castricion was also nearby. In the vicinity of today's Mandrensko Lake dam, the Skafida fortress was located. The settlement of Rosokastron is also mentioned. Aquae calidae was also a famous settlement, the successor of which are today's Burgas mineral baths.

To the south of today's Burgas, in the area of Poros, where the Mandrensko Lake dam flows into the sea, in the Middle Ages there was a fortified settlement called Pyrgos (the name derives from a fortress tower - pirg).

On the current site, Burgas probably arose in the first half of the 17th century. Perhaps this happened when the medieval settlement, Pyrgos, whose name was transferred to the new settlement, disappeared. It arose gradually from the temporary fishermen's huts. The new settlement was so insignificant that it bore the name Ahelo-Burgas in connection with the then famous city of Anchialo (now Pomorie). After the Liberation, the town was still small with about 3,000 inhabitants. The construction of the port in 1906, as well as the laying of the railway line Plovdiv-Stara Zagora-Burgas, gave a great impetus to its development. The city is taking shape as a Black Sea port of Southern Bulgaria, including for Sofia. At the same time, machine building and metalworking are developed here on the basis of imported metal, and the textile industry on the basis of imported cotton.
