The national mountain winter resort of Borovets (1346 m above sea level) is located 10 km from Samokov and 72 km from Sofia. It is located on the northern slopes of Rila mountains among centuries-old pine forests, which gave the resort its name (formerly Chamkoria). It is pleasantly cool in summer and attractive in winter with the favorable conditions it provides for winter sports. Borovets began to take shape as a resort in 1899, when Prince Ferdinand took a significant part of Rila for personal use. In the middle of Chamkoria natural park, royal summer palaces and many villas for the king's close friends and wealthy owners are springing up. In 1948, Borovets was officially declared a republican resort. The first ten years it was important above all for the development of domestic tourism but with the construction of new base, tourist infrastructure and especially with the construction of numerous hotels and ski-lifts, it gained international fame and specialization mainly as a winter sports tourism center.
