Stara Zagora is the administrative and cultural center of the district, where the roads of the district and the country meet as a focus. It is one of the ancient settlements in Bulgaria, founded in the 6th century BC by the Thracians under the name Beroe. Eight names mark its historical development. In the 11th century, on the site of the old Thracian settlement, the Roman fortress city of Augusta Traiana arose, which prospered very quickly and whose remains are still being discovered today. From 462 AD, the city was known as Verea. For a short time in the 8th century it was called Irinopolne after the Byzantine empress Irina, and during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom Borui, which is clearly a Slavo-Bulgarian transcription of its Thracian name. The Turks called it Eski Zagra (Eski Zaara) fertile land, and before that Eski Hisar (old fortress). After the Liberation, it was called Stara Zagora from "zad gora" - behind the mountain.
The city actively participated in the historical struggles of the Bulgarian people. The highlight of which was the Starozagorsko uprising that broke out in 1875, led by Kolyu Ganchev.
