Simitli is located in the valley of the Struma River at the exit of the Oranovsky gorge. HERE the Struma River receives the Gradev River. It is surrounded from the east by the western slopes of Rila and Pirin, and from the west by the Vlahina mountains, at 260-300 m above sea level. It is located 17 km south of Blagoevgrad, 48 km north of Sandanski.
Simitli is an old settlement and the center of a number of villages in the valley of the same name. In the period 1943-1945, it was called Izvorite. Today's settlement was created by the merger of Simitli and Oranovo in 1965. In 1969, it was recognized as a city. There are two factors for the development of the settlement. First - the 30 mineral springs with a temperature of 56° to 60°C, with a total flow rate of 720 l/min. In the past, their water was used for domestic needs, but for 30 years the springs have been captured in the newly built bathhouse and for heating 20 decades of greenhouses.
