The town is located 12 km east of Dupnitsa and 28 km west of Samokov, at the foot of the beautiful northwestern part of Rila mountain. Its territory is formed along the alluvial cone of the Balyavitsa River, which is a left tributary of the German River. Its altitude is 728 m. The settlement is old and its origin dates back to ancient times and is due to its rich and hot mineral springs. In the area of the city, there are two brightly shaped areas of thermal waters - eastern and western, 250-300 m apart. The most important is the Banski spring /180 l/m and with a temperature of 91.5° C. In 1967, during deep drilling, a new hot mineral spring called "Geyser" was discovered, from which a hot water fountain, reaching from 8 to 18 m, erupts periodically every 4 minutes. It has a flow rate of 2500 l/m and a temperature of 103°C. The Thracians founded a settlement here called Germa /hot baths/, which the Romans turned into a fortress town with a balneological complex for war veterans. They gave it the name Germany, which is preserved in the name of the river German. The settlement has a centuries-old life. The Arab geographer Idrisi mentions it as a beautiful city in fertile surroundings. Sapareva banya is located 158 km from the city of Plovdiv. The distance from Sapareva banya to Varna is 512 km.
