Ruse is located in northeastern Bulgaria. It is located on the high right bank of the Danube River, east of the mouth of the Rusenski Lom River, opposite the Romanian city of Giurgevo. Ruse is our largest and most beautiful Danube city. The settlement owes its development to a large extent to its extremely favorable geographical location. As a port on the Danube, Ruse connects Bulgaria with many European countries: Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Romania.
Even in ancient times, an important road from the Baltic-Scandinavian countries and Russia to the White Sea and the Orient passed through the city. More than a century ago, the first railway line was laid in the Bulgarian lands from Ruschuk to Varna. In 1954, the Danube River bridge connecting Bulgaria and Romania was built. The Danube waterway, the proximity of the Romanian capital Bucharest (68 km away) and the convenient railway, road and air routes make modern Ruse a first-class transport hub.
Ruse lies on the terraced Danube bank, which is at different altitudes. The average height of the city is 45 m. In its southern periphery is the height of Levsittabia, from which a magnificent panorama of the entire city, the Danube river, the flat Wallachian plain, Giurgevo opens up. In the western part, the terrain is lowered by the wide open valley of the Danube tributary Rusenski Lom. The river bed intersects the loess bed, which is a fine-grained, easily friable yellowish rock composed of clay, calcium carbonate, and quartz sand.
Ruse is located in an area with a transitional continental climate. The average annual temperature is around 11 C. The coldest month is January, and the warmest is July. During the winter cold sometimes the Danube River freezes for 20-30 days. Ruse spring is characterized by sharp temperature jumps and windy days.
The Ruse settlement mound is located within the boundaries of the modern city. It is a prehistoric settlement that existed more than 5000 years ago. Its inhabitants were mainly engaged in fishing.
