Roman is located on the Iskar River at the confluence of the Malki Iskar River, at an altitude of 150 m. It is 104 km from Sofia by rail, 32 km from Mezdra and 47 km from Vratsa.
The name Roman is Old Slavic. According to V. Mikov, it originates from the richly growing yarrow grass here. K. Irechek notes that the name is ancient, and Ivan Vazov, when he came for the first time, was delighted with this region and wrote in his notes in 1921: "This area, where the two Iskar the Great and the Small flow together, is a real natural wealth - two rivers, fine sand, sunbathing, azure expanse". Later, Elin Pelin also fell in love with the beauty of the surroundings, who said "I often fished in Iskra near the Roman station... This area is beautiful, just like the whole area around Roman is beautiful, rich in large catfish. I always enjoyed going there of hunting and fishing around this village, which bears such a fine name".
