Pravets is located at the foot of the Bilo hill along the Praveshka river, a tributary of the Malki Iskar river, at 370 m above sea level. It is 63 km from Sofia and is almost halfway between Botevgrad and Etropole.
Pravets is an old settlement, the successor of a Thracian-Roman settlement. Important roads to Sofia, Etropole and Yablanitsa cross here. Among the Slavs, it received the name Pravets, i.e. a shortcut. Some derive its name from the fact that it is to the right of the Sofia-Ruse highway. It was first mentioned in 1430 in a written document, in a copy of a gospel in 1578.
