The town of Petrich is located at the foot of the beautiful Belasitsa mountain, on both banks of the Petrified river Luda Mara/, at 90-200 m above sea level. c. It is located 180 km south of Sofia, 88 km from Blagoevgrad and 23 km southwest of the town of Sandanski. Petrich is our southwesternmost town. It originated in ancient times. It was the capital of the Slavic tribe of the Medes. Nearby is the Kozhuh mountain and the Struma river valley at the intersection of the roads from Sofia to Thessaloniki and from Bitola via Nevrokop /today Gotse Delchev/ to Edirne. It bore the name Petra, which comes from "petros" - stone and corresponds to the abundance of stones. During the invasions of the Huns, Goths and others, the city was destroyed, and its inhabitants settled in the small valley along the torrential cone of the Luda Mara river.
