Pamporovo is located in the interior of the Rhodope Mountains. Until 1931, there were several wooden houses in the resort for the needs of shepherds and livestock. Old Nikola Chichovski and Vasil Sirakov appreciated the natural conditions of the area well and in 1933 built the first two hotels-boarding houses, with which they laid the foundations of the future resort. In 1936, the former border outpost at the foot of Snezhanka village was converted into a tourist hut (the old "Studenets" hut). Enterprising families from Plovdiv, Sofia and Chepelare built villas in the following years. In the period 1933-1939, the resort had approx. with 200 beds.
This is the legacy that people's power received and after 1944 became the initial base of professional unions. Since 1961, the modern hotels of Balkantourist ("Snezhanka", "Orpheus", Panorama", "Murgavets", "Prespa") have been growing one after the other, the modern rest homes of the CS of the BPS and various departments, a large tourist lodge (with a total of 3000 beds, of which 3 in 6 mountain hotels), new post office, household combine, hostel and others. In the complex there are more than 10 restaurants, the original local restaurants "Chevermeto" and "Malina", pastry shops, bars and discotheques.
The resort develops for domestic and international tourism equally actively in summer and winter. It is notable not only for its natural beauty, but also for its healthy Balkan climate, cool in summer and mild in winter (average yearT.8.5°C), many sunny days and windless weather. Various sports competitions gained great popularity in our country and abroad, especially those for the "Rhodopa" and "Urozhai" cups. There are excellent ski slopes and equipment for the needs of winter sports.
By means of roads and ski lifts, the entire complex is connected to the hut and the peak of Snezhanka, the resort area of Ardashli and the Smolyan Lakes. A new TV tower was opened at the top, in 1979, with a panoramic pastry shop and 2 restaurants at its base. From there an excellent panorama opens up to the southernmost part of the Rhodope Mountains, to the Pereliksko-Prespa and Chernatyshka divisions of the Rhodopes, for which Pamporovo is the starting point. The first helicopter tourist connection from Plovdiv to Pamporovo was opened in 1980, in our country.
Pamporovo is visited by a very large number of foreign and Bulgarian tourists all year round and has great prospects. Many new hotels, a cultural and information center, indoor swimming pools, etc. are under construction.
The road continues from Pamporovo in a southerly direction past a number of rest stations, the imposing Sokolitsa rock (right) and gradually descends past the SBA campsite and several Smolyan rest stations.
