The town of Montana is located in the valley extension of the Ogosta river between the hills of Pastrina and Vernishko bardo, at 160 m above sea level. c. It is 114 km from Sofia, 49 km from Lom and 40 km from Vratsa. It is the successor of the old Roman fortress village of Castra ad Montanenzium /fortress in the mountains/. The found tools, ornaments, coins, etc. point to the XII and the long life of the settlement, which originally grew on the Kalebair hill on the left bank of the Augusta river. From here flowed a lush karst spring /now captured/, which is an important city-shaping factor. The roads crossing here also played a big role in the development of the fortress settlement. From the finds, we know that there was a settlement here in the 13th century. During the feudal era, there was a small roadside settlement here, which arose after the construction of the Sofia-Lom road and the development of the Lom port as the capital's gateway to Central and Western Europe.
