The town of Lovech is picturesquely located on both banks of the Osam River, where it leaves the Pred Balkan area, at 165 m above sea level. height. Originally, the city was located in the area of Hisarlaka and is the successor of the Roman fortress settlement of Melta. Later, in the 12th century, the settlement moved down to the right bank of the Osam River, where Varosh is today. The name of the city comes from the medieval Lovac, i.e. city of hunters. In the 11th and 12th centuries, during Byzantine slavery, the city was in decline. In 1187, the Byzantines failed to crush the uprising of the Bulgarians and were forced to sign the Treaty of Lovchen, which recognized the independence of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom.
