Kyustendil is located in the southwestern part of the basin of the same name, near the Banska rover. To the south, the city reaches the northernmost branch of the Osogovo mountain - Hisarlka hill. Its altitude is 510 m.
The city arose in Roman times under the name Pautalia (Puteos - spring, bath). The abundant mineral springs that gush at the foot of Hisarluk have a particularly favorable influence on its development. A large mineral bath- asklepion was built. It occupied 3600 m2 and was the second largest after the bath in Epidaurus - Greece. Pautalia was a well-developed and beautiful city.
In the Middle Ages, Kyustendil was an important fortress and was called Velbajd.
