Kozloduy is located 29 km west of the town of Oryahovo. Initially, the settlement was located 3 km west of the Ogosta River in the town of Chetate /Romanian word translated as "fortress". Some authors want to deduce the name of the village from the name of Kozludere /nyksy dol/. Others look for the origin in the Latin meaning of Colozui - "corner of the ice", which is formed here in some winters when ice blocks accumulate. When the settlement moved to its more advantageous present-day location is not known. This is supposed to have happened after the great flood of the Danube and Augusta rivers in 1840.
