Hisarya is located in central Bulgaria. The favorable combination of numerous mineral springs (16 - with water temperature from 37°С to 49.5°С) with its geographical location are the reason for the early settlement of these lands.
The oldest settlement on the territory of today's city was located next to the current polyclinic. It arose during the late Neolith, around the 5th millennium BC. The mineral baths were used even during the Roman rule. Then, today's Hisarya resort was turned into a Roman imperial hospital. There were baths, paved streets with sewage, a brick aqueduct in which flowed water captured from Srednogorski springs and many public buildings: a nymphaeum, a Roman villa (villa urbana), the bath at Havuza, Injeza and Momina bath. The city was known as Augusta.
In 251, the entire surrounding area was destroyed by the Goths. This became the reason to build a fortress wall, which was completed by the fourth century. In the 5th and 6th centuries, the city was in its heyday. Then many Christian churches were built in it and it became an episcopal center. After the settlement of the Slavs and proto-Bulgarians, the city was called with the sonorous name Toplica. Geoffroy de Villardouin reported in his book History of the Conquest of Constantinople, published in Paris in 1847, that the Latin Emperor Henry II in 1206 captured the city. The Hissar fortress was also besieged by the Ottoman conquerors for three months and in 1364 was captured by their general Lala Shahin-Shahabedin Pasha. In the 16th century, Turkish colonists settled in Hisarya.
