The town of Karlovo is located in the Sub-Balkan Karlov Basin, between the thresholds of Koznitsa and Krastec /Strajata/, at the southern foot of the Kaloferska Planina, from the Sredna Stara Planina. The basin is part of the Rose Valley. It is located 56 km north of the regional city of Plovdiv. The station is on the Sofia-Burgas and Plovdiv-Karlovo railway lines. The city is crossed by important highways from Sofia to Burgas and Varna and from Plovdiv through Trajan Pass to Northern Bulgaria. It lies at 450 m above sea level.. Stara Reka, a left tributary of the Stryama River, flows through the city. To the north of Karlovo, Stara Reka forms the lush Karlovo waterfall, Suchurum. The climate is transitional continental with an average annual temperature of 11.9 C and an annual precipitation amount of 653 mm.
