The town of Dobrich is located on the Dobrudja plateau on both banks of the small Dobrichka river /Kanladere/ at 220 m above sea level. c. It is located 50 km north of Varna, 92 km southeast of Silistra and 34 km northwest of Balchik. The emergence of the city in the 15th century is closely related to its rich agricultural area and its important crossroads. Until 1882, the city was called Hadjioglu Bazardzic, after the rich merchant Hadjioglu Bakal, who had a large inn here. The lively economic functions and, above all, the large market for food, livestock, wool, honey and wax, forced over time to add to its name: "pazarjik", i.e. an important market place.
