The city of Batak is known for its heroic participation in the April Uprising, for the brutal slaughter of its population by the enslavers. It is located 16 km from Peshtera, 32 km from Pazardzhik, at 1036 m above sea level. A settlement named Batak is mentioned in a number of documents and monuments. It appears in a stone inscription from 1592 in the Krichim monastery. Today's settlement, according to the chronicle of Pope Metodiy Draganov, was founded in the year of the Mohammedanization of the Chepin villages in 1657. Refugees from Dorkovo, Kostandovo, etc. found the valley of the Stara River to be a suitable place and founded their new settlement at the northern foot of the Batashka Mountain - halfway between Peshtera and Rakitovo, between Pazardzhik and today's Velingrad. The emergence of Batak was studied by S. Zahariev, K. Irechek, Iv. Batakliev and other scientists. Batak is located 58 km from the city of Plovdiv. The distance from Batak to Varna is 424 km.
