Balchik is located in northeastern Bulgaria.It is located 46 km from Varna, 180 km from Burgas, 425 km from Plovdiv and 490 km from Sofia.The city was settled by Ionian colonists probably in the 5th century BC. Even before the arrival of the Greeks, a Thracian settlement coexisted on the plateau.The city goes down in history with the name Krunoi or Kruni, which literally means springs.Such bountiful springs are still gushing out along the two valleys from both ends of the city.Later it was called Dionysopolis.Ancient authors connect this change of name with the legend of the statue of the god Dionysus, the god of wine and merriment, thrown out of the sea near the city.It is most likely that this name was imposed due to the developed viticulture in these places.
The city also existed during the Roman rule.During the first years of the spread of Christianity, it was the seat of a bishop.From the middle of the 3rd to the end of the 2nd century BC, he minted his coins mainly with the image of his patron - the god Dionysus.Then he was in his greatest glory.It gradually declined during the time of the barbarian invasions, while in the Middle Ages its former superiority was occupied by the city of Kavarna, which had overtaken it.
An interesting place to visit is the palace of the former Romanian Queen Maria - wife of King Ferdinand and mother of the last Romanian king."Tenha Yuva" ("Quiet nest") - that's what she called her palace.The Queen's poetic fantasy has been embodied through the skillful craftsmanship of skilled architects, engineers and gardeners in this fabulous palace, which is now accessible to every tourist.
The greatest asset of the entire palace, however, is its park.The mild climate and abundant water favor the development of more than 3,000 species of plants collected from the Mediterranean islands, from the coast of the Pacific Ocean and the Black Sea, from South Asia and America.The entire park is now a branch of the botanical garden at Sofia University "Kliment Ohridski".The collection of over 250 species of cacti is especially rich.
