From the existing thirty floating islands, today there are only a few left, and they are just what gives that special beauty to the lake surface. During high water levels, these islands are simply elevated from the bottom and then they float freely, from coast to coast. The biggest floating island is called the Long Part, and the smaller island is named Stratoria. Besides the floating, the lake also has two real islands.
This environmental oasis has the highest lake water level in Europe. It is situated at 1,210 m above the sea level, and the whole area is surrounded by mountain ranges: Emerika, Gramada and Vardenik. The deepest point of the lake is at the dam in the northern part (22 m) while the southern part is wider and shallower (from two to six meters). Vlasina Lake is located 283 km from the city of Plovdiv. The distance from Vlasina Lake to Istanbul is 690 km.
