Pristina is the old residence of the Nemanjić and Branković families. Its architecture is mainly oriental and, in the very centre, there is the impressive Tsar's Mosque from the 15th century. It was built from carefully trimmed stone blocks without mortar! Its slender minairs and domes are nicely shaped while the portals and windows are all modestly decorated. Next to it there is a 19th century Clock Tower. Not far from here, there are two Turkish baths. The Grand Turkish bath is decorated with šadrvan, the fountain with a basin, and a few drawing rooms. Across the street from the bath there is an unusual example of oriental architecture, with a protruding erker (a kind of balcony) resting on wooden consoles. Less simple than the Tsar's Mosque is the impressive Čarši Mosque with a cluster of huge windows.
