The city's population in 2009 was 2 million people and its urban agglomeration 2.6 million. Bucharest was first mentioned in a princely charter with the seal of the Wallachian ruler, Vlad Tepes, issued in 1459. It says that he built a fortified camp on the banks of the Dambovitsa river with the name Bucharest Fortress. In 1464 during the reign of Radu cel Frumos (Radu the Handsome), Bucharest became a capital city together with the then capital of Wallachia - Targovishte. It was only in 1659 that Bucharest was declared the only capital.
