Thessaloniki is a large economic center. Its port is the second largest in Greece. It is also available for the largest ocean liners. According to the agreements concluded several years ago between the Bulgarian and Greek governments, Bulgaria is allowed to use the port of Thessaloniki for the import and export of its goods.
The city has a shipyard, a large oil refinery, cement and artificial fertilizer plants, textile, shoe and clothing factories, mills, oil mills, several metal processing plants and over 100 tobacco warehouses. Every year, an international sample fair is held in Thessaloniki.

The distance from Thessaloniki City to Istanbul City is 370 miles. Travel time by car is about 7 hours and 30 minutes. This is the route between Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) and Istanbul Airport (IST). Thessaloniki airport is busiest during summer when there are many tourists traveling to the resort of Halkidiki. Today, the city is known for its festivals, events (film, sports, etc.) and exciting nightlife. It is considered the cultural capital of Greece. Thessaloniki is famous for its large shopping streets, restaurants in the Ladadika area and lively alleys. Tsimiski Street, Mitropoleos and Koromila Boulevard are the most popular shopping streets in the city and are among the most expensive and exclusive high streets in all of Greece.
